Join us in cultivating compassion (Pay it forward project)

Choose to thrive by being compassionate!

Let’s make Kindness be the operating order in our school as well as it is for so many others. All interaction should reflect that.

What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?

~Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Here is what we read on “The Charter for Compassion” website:

“Cultivating compassion in educational settings, and creating the kind of culture where it is a norm of student and staff behaviour, may seem at first a noble ideal: a nice-to-have, something to be undertaken only when all other priorities are met. Yet we now have the evidence to show that a school’s ability to foster real learning, indeed to fulfill its fundamental purpose, depends on its ability to do just that.

More and more schools and educational organizations/groups are acting on this evidence and creating compassion-filled learning environments. Students and adults alike thrive when their social and emotional needs are met, when they feel a sense of belonging, when they feel their voices are welcomed and heard. Choosing to uphold the principles of compassion is central to a school’s ability to create a caring and inclusive culture and climate, to nurture a strong moral identity among those who walk through its doors, and to invite deep participation and learning.

What’s more, compassionate action is foundational to effective collaboration, and to advancing the common good—attributes that, in today’s increasingly connected world—are central to success. A compassionate school begins with the adults on campus walking their talk and modelling compassion to all.”

Let’s start with this: When you use a person’s name, show respect to them and their ideas!

Education expert Molly Barker created an easy tool for younger kids to learn about empathy and compassion: Simply take a few pairs of shoes and label them. “Poor,” “rich,” “boy,” “girl,” “homeless,” “physically disabled,” “old,” “young,” “sick,” “from a different country,” “different religion,” “different ethnicity,” and “different political beliefs.” She then asks the child to “walk” in another person’s shoes.   (source)

In other words: “Do to others only what you would like to be done to you”.

In 2008, Seattle hosted the Seeds of Compassion event with the Dalai Lama, and in 2010, the Seattle City Council declared Seattle to be the world’s first “Compassionate City.” Now, more than 80 cities have joined the movement — from Gaziantep, Turkey, to Louisville, Kentucky.

The Youth Ambassador Program, headed by Lori Markowitz, grew out of Seattle’s 2008 Seeds of Compassion event. Markowitz creates programs based on her belief that “we don’t empower young people enough to be part of the solution.”

Markowitz was asked by the county court system to come up with a way for her ambassadors to combat absenteeism in Seattle’s low-performing schools. One of her teen-to-teen mentoring programs proved so successful that the school is now offering it as an education course for credit.

Now the state of Washington is looking at this class to see if it can be replicated around the state because it changes the environment in the schools.

The Charter for Compassion has also spawned a movement to create a worldwide network of compassionate schools. The first “official” compassionate school was named in London, Ontario, in 2011.(Canada)

The drive to bring compassion to schools has increased even faster than the city campaign. A number of programs were started not by adults, but by the children themselves.

The Vancouver School Board ( Canada) offers a complete compassion curriculum . Lessons range from a high school science lesson on water systems, which asks, “How do our choices have environmental and human consequences?” to elementary school exercises on the importance of memory to children and adults. And now, a program cosponsored by the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education is rolling out compassion education for kids and training for teachers across the province.

Pay it forward – let’s revive this project!

I suggest to continue the project ” Pay it forward” . I can’t find a better project for the International Day of all children.

Let’s  post here our good deeds and the list of people who are participating or are touched by them.

For those who don’t know what we mean , please, see this post and this one.

I remind you that:

In 2000, Catherine Ryan Hyde’s novel “Pay It Forward” was published and adapted into a film of the same name, distributed by Warner Bros.  In Ryan Hyde’s book and movie, “Pay it Forward” is described as an obligation to do three good deeds for others in response to a good deed that one receives. Such good deeds should accomplish things that the other person cannot accomplish on their own. In this way, the practice of helping one another can spread geometrically through society, at a ratio of three to one, creating a social movement with an impact of making the world a better place.

The Pay it Forward Movement was founded in the USA helping start a ripple effect of kindness acts around the world. The president of the foundation, Charley Johnson, had an idea for encouraging kindness acts by having a Pay it Forward Bracelet that could be worn as a reminder. Since then, over a million Pay it Forward bracelets have been distributed in over 100 countries sparking acts of kindness.

In 2007, International Pay it Forward Day was founded in Australia . It has now spread to 70 countries including Romania. It is estimated that it has inspired over 5 million acts of kindness and has featured on ABC, NBC, Fox 5, Fox 8 and Global News in Canada.

Conclusion: “Regardless of how big the problems of the world may seem, each person can make a difference simply by taking the time to show love, appreciation and kindness to the people around them.”

Ideas of what others did/ we can do:

  • Write and illustrate a class picture book for children at the local hospital/ Save Children Charity for example
  • Be friendly to someone you would normally ignore
  • Help someone with homework or classwork
  • Friendship hand….trace the shape of child’s hand, write his or her name. Each member of the class then writes one complimentary word about the person until it is full. Cut out hand and display.
  • Peer tutoring e.g. grade7 students help grade 6 or5 with Maths problems, so on , or with reading
  • Do chores at home to help family members
  • Write cards to cheer up people e.g. teacher, friends, parents, grandparents, etc
  • recycling  bottles and cans.
  • In a school in Australia , all students created special  Pay it Forward Cards. Then students pulled a name out of a hat and they became the recipient of one of their good deeds. The other 2 good deeds could be completed at home, school, or in extra-curricular activities.
  • In a school in US, the students organized a school and community wide recycling program to help pay for an important surgery for a 3 year old girl named Hayley Brang. The class raised $9000 to help her and other children in need.
  • In another US Middle School , students prepared lunches which were sold to the staff and teachers at school. They created place mats with positive character quotes and decorated the cafeteria in a “restaurant style”.  All the profits were donated to charities. They wrote stories and letters which they shared with students who were coming to the school next year.
  • Other students (US) came up with an idea to help children less fortunate. They made “Birthday Boxes” for children living in local foster homes. Frequently, these children get left out on important days like birthdays. The birthday boxes were made out of shoe boxes, filled with such things as cakes, napkins, paper plates, decorations, balloons and gift cards, etc. Every child knows how much fun it is to have a birthday party.

Importanta vitaminei C

Intre secolele XVI SI XVIII, lipsa fructelor si a zarzavaturilor proaspete in alimentatia navigatorilor a provocat moartea multora dintre ei prin scorbut.

In largul marii, hrana acestora era constituita din carne uscata, mezeluri, pesmeti si peste. Se gandea, probabil, ca le va oferi astfel ocazia sa fie inmormantati in pamant-ultima dorinta a orcarui marinar-in loc sa-i coboare in apele adanci ale oceanului.
