LightSail – Flight by Light
Some exciting news connected to the Cosmology Project:
The Planetary Society will launch a test flight of LightSail on May 20, in preparation for its primary solar sailing mission in 2016.
The Planetary Society is a non – governmental Organization for democratic space exploration and its president is our “friend” you know from Science classes : Bill Nye -The Science Guy (see our first posts at Science category)
<Nye launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds needed for the Planetary Society’s LightSail project, which aims to make the long sought after idea of solar sailing a reality. More than $4 million had already been “raised by our 40,000 plus members around the world who just think it’s cool,” Nye says. These are scientists, enthusiasts and advocates “who just want to participate in space exploration, and who want to advance space science and exploration so that we’ll all learn more about the cosmos and what I like to call our place within it, our place in space.”>
Perhaps some of you will join the Bill Nye’s Society and become part of something really important!
What we created: The Spatial Missions for the Cosmology National Competition
We chose to realize 3 spatial observatories :
Gaia: “… an ambitious mission to chart a three-dimensional map of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, in the process revealing the composition, formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Gaia will provide unprecedented positional and radial velocity measurements..”
Herschel: “…The European Space Agency’s Herschel Space Observatory (formerly called Far Infrared and Sub-millimetre Telescope or FIRST) has the largest single mirror ever built for a space telescope. At 3.5-metres in diameter the mirror will collect long-wavelength radiation from some of the coldest and most distant objects in the Universe….” more information
Corot: “…CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits) is the first space mission dedicated to planetary research and designed for this purpose….”

The students ( gr. 5, 6 and 7) who realized the above paper work are (in order of their contribution):
Stefan Niculae, Victor, Lia, Stefan Staicu, Eli Mihail, Giorgia, Maria Grigore, Alexia, Vladimir Dima, Antonie Grigore, Tudor Vartic, Tudor Dima, Matei Calinescu, Sara Niculae, Tudor Manta

The Quote of the week
Because Eli will be busy with his Inkscape project this week, I post below a few quotes for him:
Who were Mahatma Gandhi or Albert Einstein? I am sure you know.( or Eli will try to write something about their incredible work)
Creativity – Educating the Heart and Mind
∞
- Creative thinking comes in Problem formulation and our schools have the problems already formulated for students
- Creative thinking means ” playing with the rules” and not “playing by the rules”
- Our Education is depersonalized and based on standardization
- We should teach awareness in schools if we want a more harmonious world
Big Questions
Here you have a question for meditation during the long weekend:
“What is our place in the cosmic perspective of life?…”
It can fuel a long debate, I guess.
What do you think about it for next Wednesday?
Before we meet, enjoy your time or ….your life!
By the way: what do you think about time? What is time? This is another Big Question that crossed my mind now and I post here for Antonie.
Thought of the Moment
“Self-absorption in all its forms kills empathy, let alone
compassion. When we focus on ourselves, our world contracts as
our problems and preoccupations loom large. But when we focus on
others, our world expands. Our own problems drift to the periphery
of the mind and so seem smaller, and we increase our capacity for
connection – or compassionate action.”
– Daniel Goleman
Beautiful quote
What Is Love? I have met in the streets a very poor young man who was in love. His hat was old, his coat worn, the water passed through his shoes and the stars through his soul.
– Victor Hugo
The Big Bang and beyond
For your competition about The Big Bang Theory , a nice video.
But we invite you to think beyond the Big Bang and speculate about the parallel universes
Antonie already posted about the String theory. Now, we suggest you to watch this video
Introducing the Wishwall
A nice way to collaborate or share different ideas is by using Padlet and its wishwalls as you can see in this example (after it was shared)
Alternatively, you can embed the image in WordPress:
The collage was created with pickmonkey and posted on the wishwall in Padlet
